Indian Railways had instructed Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) to prepare a detailed project report on this within six months. The project, however, will be implemented upto 3 years. After completion of this project, Indian Railways passenger will be able to travel at the speed of 500 kmph.
“We would be very closely associated with RITES as they would collect all the required data after which we would together do the analysis of the sufficiently high clientele sectors where Maglev can be implemented,” Nitin Chowdhary, executive director, mechanical engineering (development), Ministry of Railways said.
Maglev is basically Magnetic Levitation Technology that enables train to run at 1 to 6 inches above the ground, using a system of magnets. This process eliminates friction, inducing faster speed in the system. Indian Railways has been in talks with several experts in the industry and it seems to be economically viable.
